The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy

melancholy death of oyster boy

He came on tiptoe,
he came on the sly,
sweat on his forehead,
and on his lips-a lie.
“Son, are you happy? I don’t mean to pry,
but do you dream of Heaven?
Have you ever wanted to die?”

Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories by Tim Burton.

XMMS Scrobbler 0.4.0

So you tried to compile XMMS Scrobbler plugin and got the following

make[1]: *** No rule to make target `tags/id3v1.c’, needed by `libbmp_scrobbler_la-id3v1.lo’.  Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/path/to/src/xmms-scrobbler-0.4.0′
make: *** [all] Error 2.

No worries, cos it’s definitely due to a few missing source files under tags/ and these files can directly be copied from the previous version (0.3.8).

Either you can copy them manually, or you can download the complete source package here: xmms-scrobbler-0.4.0.tar.bz2.

Happy last.fm scrobblings ;)

Firefox 3’s cookies.sqlite & wget

I love wget, I love Firefox, and I use Rapidshare a lot. Making a list of files to download from Rapidshare, I used to run the following command a lot:

wget –load-cookies ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/cookies.txt -i url.list

But that was the time I spent an “Oops!” when wget complained with “Cannot open cookies file: … : No such file or directory”, and I couldn’t find my lovely cookies.txt under the profile directory. It seemed that Firefox had improved its handling of cookies by using a simple DB-like file: cookies.sqlite.

So I Googled and found that a lot wgetters were out there desperately complaining about the same issue. But no worries, you dear visitor, since that was the past: you got two lovely options to get your bloody cookies.txt back ;)

  1. The geeky way: Practice your German and Python scripting on this blog post.
  2. An add-on for everything way: Use this simple add-on to export your cookies in TXT format.

Yepp, that easy!

Catch up

Still alive, still an undergrad.

First things first, check out my new WP-theme–I have edited a simple clean theme and replaced some stuff. See the page footer for details/links.

On the way I have also upgraded WP itself, and added a FriendFeed widget. If you wanna hear from me more often, then follow me on one of these channels.

Footnote tricks in TeX

As in the most of the papers around, what I wanted was to use symbols for the footnotes in the title page; and to use numbers for rest of the document. By,

\documentclass[11pt, twocolumn, titlepage]{article}

...

\maketitle

...

I was getting numbers for both. And by,

\documentclass[11pt, twocolumn]{article}

...

\maketitle

...

I got what I wanted, but with a numbered title page! So, after Googling a little, I found this trick:

\documentclass[11pt, twocolumn, titlepage]{article}

...

\renewcommand\thefootnote{\fnsymbol{footnote}}
\maketitle
\renewcommand\thefootnote{\arabic{footnote}}
...

Thank God, I am using TeX after ~30 years it’s been invented. Phew!

A life of discretion

Why, I–again in the middle of the night–found myself listening to Queen of Damned soundtrack and murmuring this lovely quote to myself:

Marius: A vampire’s life is a life of discretion.
Lestat: Discretion? Why should we hide, Marius? We are the powerful. We are the immortal. We should walk fearless in the open.
[They both stop to watch a girl playing a violin]
Marius: That cannot be. We are vulnerable during the day. Mortals must never know of us.
Lestat: So I could never know her?
Marius: Not unless you wanted to kill her.
Lestat: So I can never be known?
Marius: You must be dead to the world.

Bio Pipeline Contest: You’re kidding, right?
